The Historical Significance of Laguna Beach
One thing that makes Laguna Beach so unique is that it’s peaceful and beautiful and has quite a bit of history that lies on those sandy shores. Panama City was a wilderness country home to only the Creek Indians until the late 1800s. Laguna Beach was established in 1935.
Some early commercial and residential developments were made, but all production was put on hold when WWII broke out. After the war, some land developers wanted to continue to build on Laguna Beach, but the residents fought back to keep the beaches dedicated and undeveloped. The case went all the way to the Florida Supreme Court, and the residents won.
Laguna Beach isn’t completely void of commercial buildings- there are plenty to the east and west of the beach. However, a stretch of coastline more than 4,000 feet long remains undeveloped and in a more natural state than the surrounding beaches.
